Scammers use various tricks to steal your ATM card details and PIN. One common method is the use of a hidden camera or a card skimmer placed over the card slot. When you insert your card, the device reads your card’s information, while the hidden camera records your PIN as you enter it. The scammer later retrieves this data and uses it to make unauthorized withdrawals.

Another tactic is “shoulder surfing,” where the scammer stands nearby and watches as you enter your PIN. In some cases, they may pretend to offer help, especially if you’re having trouble with the machine. Once they’ve learned your PIN and seen your card, they might pickpocket it or switch it with a fake one. These criminals often target older adults or people who seem unsure when using the ATM, taking advantage of their confusion.

A newer scam involves fake ATMs or machines that are tampered with to keep your card stuck. When the user leaves to get help, the scammer retrieves the card and uses it. Sometimes, a scammer may even stand near a real ATM and “guide” you through a fake process, asking for your PIN under the pretense of helping. These scams are especially dangerous because they happen in public places where people usually feel safe.

To stay safe from ATM scams, always cover the keypad when entering your PIN and avoid using ATMs that look damaged or suspicious. If your card gets stuck, contact the bank directly and do not accept help from strangers. Regularly check your bank statements and enable SMS alerts to monitor any unauthorized transactions.

ATM scams are a serious threat, especially in areas where people are less familiar with digital security.
